Teach Me Sushi

I’d like to preface this review by stating that I am not a sushi master chef and have not been trained at Nobu, near Nobu, or at all. In fact, I’ve never been to Nobu. With that said, here is my review of Teach Me Sushi.

Teach Me Sushi is an app that does exactly what it sets out to do, teach you how to make sushi. To help you throughout the course, you can watch the 13 (action packed?) videos and look through the countless step by step videos showing how to do just about everything.

Leading you through this journey is your slightly sweaty, extremely enthusiatic Australian teacher, Jake. Jake, according to the Teach Me Sushi website, was trained at my local Yo sushi and now has been “involved in the Sushi catering world for the last 7 years”. Needless to say, he seems like a pretty legit sushi teacher with a clear speaking voice and a knack for the important.

The app is layed out in the menu section, taking an aspiring sushi chef from choosing the proper fish to making sashimi and “fashion sandwiches” (whatever that means). While some sections only have a video (such as how to choose your fish), most of them have a video, a step by step section, and an about section. All of the videos and step by step information are very well thought out and rather easy to follow. Even a bozo like me could cook sushi with these instructions.

Also included in the app is an equipment list and an ingredient list to help you out when you go shopping for the necessary supplies. As easy as sushi seems to be to make, it’s rather expensive to buy all the necessary tools and the needed fish and wrappings. There is also a rice timer included that works with the rice cooking lesson to give you the perfect bowl of rice.

Check out Teach Me Sushi before your next get together and wow your friends like never before. As Jake says, “When you prepare a sushi meal for your friends who are “into” sushi, it will be received like nothing else you make. Chicken, steak, sirloin of tuna….. all have nothing on the simple maki or Californian roll.”
