Tips How To Eat Dim Sum

Dim Sum is a culinary practice that can be traced back to ancient Cantonese origins. Translated as “to touch the heart,” Dim Sum has become an increasingly popular option for a casual breakfast or lunch. Offered in many authentic Chinese restaurants, Dim Sum consists of small portions of specialty foods that are offered on carts or trays that are brought to your table by a server. The beauty of Dim Sum is that it can be enjoyed by everyone, from an intimate gathering between two, to a larger group of diners. Dim Sum provides an opportunity to taste and sample from a variety of dishes. Here are some tips to make the dim sum experience more comfortable for first timers.

Dim Sum Restaurant Selection
If new to eating Dim Sum, diners should check with friends or locals who frequent Dim Sum establishments for recommendations. It is true that no two dim sum restaurants are exactly alike. Diners who eat Dim Sum on a regular basis usually eat at multiple locations, frequenting their favorite places more often. The general rule of, the more crowded the restaurant-the better the food, is often true in the case of Dim Sum. Some restaurants offer Dim Sum every day while many places only offer Dim Sum during specific morning to afternoon hours on weekends. These restaurants can be very busy on the weekends so be prepared to wait for a table. Although the basic staple offerings of Dim Sum are similar across all restaurants, each place will have a unique style of preparation. In addition, each Dim Sum location may offer specialty dishes that may not be found elsewhere.

Dim Sum Waiter
Since the restaurant servers are assigned to push food carts and carry trays to many different tables, each table is assigned a waiter from which drinks and tea can be ordered. Upon seating, the waiter will introduce himself and begin to fill the table glasses with water. The waiter can also answer any questions about pricing and assist with containers to pack up leftovers.(suite101 - Jacob Seykans)
